Slickly assembled with a great en media res opening that drops us into the middle of a kaiju attack with rocket gauntlet soldiers dropping out of the sky to take it on. The lead captain transforming to Ultraman comes out of nowhere, and the choreography of the monster battle isn't quite as exciting as the dynamic ground perspective work, but there's some really striking shots in there, with a nice layer of eeriness to Ultraman's reveal, and I like that this follows the tradition of him bloodily ripping a piece off his opponent to beat the monster with. There's not much story or character development yet, but that's fine. This was all about introductions, and this was a hell of an exciting one. I'm curious to learn how this version of Ultraman bonded to the captain. I'm curious what the story behind this era of monsters is. I'm curious if they'll explore the aftermath of destruction in a way that fits the level of it that was unleashed. And I'm curious who the serious bazooka launching woman in very short shorts is. This is my first time getting to watch an Ultraman series as it's being released, many thanks to Tsuburaya's YouTube simulcasts, and I am fully on board for where we go from here.
