The head of the forestry department, Pietro, has to help the newly arrived commissioner Vincenzo Nappi solve a case of murder of a girl, where it seems to be the fault of a wolf. The new commissioner turns out not to be happy to be a guest in the forestry office and even less to share the accommodation with the veterinarian Silvia Bussolati. After the wolf hunt, it turns out that it wasn't his fault.
An old local legend tells of a ghost of a child wandering through the forest. An elderly local with a drinking habit, Bepi, says he saw it, and at the same time there is a report of the kidnapping of a child, the son of building contractors. In this episode appears Giorgio, Pietro's nephew, whom his mother wanted to take to a quieter place, after he had been denounced in Milan.
One day Pietro discovers that his hermit friend, who lived in solitude in the remains of the Prato Piazza fort, has died. It would seem that the friend has been dead for several days, but strangely enough, his body is excellently preserved. Pietro will have to investigate this story together with the police commander Nappi. The story is intertwined with a toxic waste and his nephew Giorgio, after destroying the forestry machine, is employed as Pietro's helper.
After several arson raids in the forest, Vincenzo and Pietro investigate the culprit together. The owner of the ski resort hired an arsonist to expand his pistes on the site of the burned-out forest. Vincenzo wrongly suspects Simone, who has a criminal record, but the boy's innocence is proven. Roberto, the son of the owner of the Flores factory, is also responsible for the fires and is accused of murder: he killed his father and set fire to the factory. His motive was that his father did not want to agree to sell the family factory to a French multinational, and he was sickly jealous of his adopted brother Simone. By coincidence, Silvia and Vincenzo enter the dance competition together, and at the end of the evening they kiss each other.
In the Malga di Assunta, during a lunch, a well-known person in the village dies of poisoning. Immediately the blame falls on the cook, Chiara the blind, daughter of Roccia. Pietro immediately realizes that it couldn't have been her, and immediately starts investigating.
