that was so beautiful i'm in tears
oh fuck you for kinda sorta maybe making me feel something... ice skating is supposed to be boring and i hate romance, so i'm still shocked that i enjoyed this show. i'd say that now i need to go and do something ridiculous like fight a bear to regain my cool, but i've never been cool, so it's fine.
A sports anime that follows Yuri, Viktor, and (another) Yuri, on their journey to win the Grand Prix Final. Leaning heavily into some figure skating technicalities, it's still easy to follow through and focus on the characters' personal struggles.
The animation can get a bit weird at times, but mostly, it's really well done, especially the choreographies. They're beautiful, with lovely soundtracks, and feel very unique to the characters' personalities.
The plot itself is straightforward enough — train, compete, train again, compete, and repeat until the Final. Still, it's the characters that make everything come alive. It's their personal journeys through it all that grasps your attention more than the competitions. Interestingly, the show surprises with the competitions' results, leading to it feeling almost like a real competition. It's also nice to see Yuri and Viktor's relationship developed in clear and more than hinted at ways.
The cast is a colourful one, with diverse personalities. There are a few cliches that fans of anime will quickly recognize, but even then, within the contest, they feel real and fit within the show. Yuri Plisetsky steals the show more often than not, being forceful but still likeable and having the best choreographies (the bonus choreography Yuri on Ice - Welcome to the madness is definitely worth a watch).
For fans of anime and figure skating, this show is definitely worth a watch. In fact, despite being a sports anime and having some of the cliches, it's still a satisfying story to follow.
