[7.5/10] The cast here is impeccable, and I like the short as a characteristically demented take on the “Be careful what you wish for” story. There’s a trademark The Boys mix of the wholesome and raunchy when a little girl wants to reconcile her parents by having them beat up a supervillain. Something about young Maya convincing an aging and grouchy hammers-for-hands baddie to challenge her parents in order to rekindle their love is kind of adorable. And the fact that when Maya sees the carnage and hears the carnal aftermath of what she’s done, she’s ready for her parents to go ahead and get divorced, is a typically bleak-yet-amusing punchline to the whole thing.
The animation is also nice here, using some of the superhero style that's seen on Young Justice and other shows in the same vein that I tend to like. Overall, another fun use of The Boys’ sandbox to tell a smaller story.
Damn, this was a great fucking episode; dunno why everyone's bitching about it. Actually, I do, because when shows like this aren't 60 straight minutes of surface level humor and violence, they get all bitchy. And, naturally, since they can't binge the entire season in one go, they think there's no overall plot because their brains are so wired to instant gratification that anything that doesn't satisfy that, "sucks".
Discovery was my first proper Trek show. I'd watched bits and pieces of some of the other shows, particularly TNG and Voyager when they were on TV or when my parents were watching it, and I vaguely remember watching Enterprise, but not enough to really count it in any meaningful way especially as I remember almost nothing about it.
So with all that said this episode, and the show as a whole, is particularly meaningful to me. I've grown and changed with this characters, much as I imagine those who grew up on any of the other shows did too, and it's never easy to say goodbye to anything that means so much.
But I don't feel sad. I'm so happy with how it ended, it was pretty much everything I wanted. And it was hopeful, which feels pretty perfect for Star Trek. I'll never forget this show and until we meet again, "Let's fly".
