Normal People: 1x06 Episode 6

On a second watch, I am so frustrated with Connell. Every step of the way, he just will not ever actually show Marianne he cares about her. He took so long earlier on to apologise for treating her like shit at school, and now he seems incapable of asking her to be his girlfriend. She makes the first move every time. He tells her he loves her, she obviously doesn’t feel sure he actually does, and he does shit all to show her. He is earnestly so cowardly when it comes to being there for Marianne. Just when I think he might actually make any kind of stand or commitment to her, maybe ask her on a date… he asks her for nudes???

Man, all they have is sex. He’s such a wet rag of a partner I feel sorry for her. There’s a point where being anxious and in your head about your emotions crosses over to being self-absorbed and inconsiderate of the other person’s feelings. She clearly loves him way beyond all of it and gets little back for it aside from a good ploughing

Dark Side of Comedy

I'm enjoying learning about these figures in comedy history, but it's hard to ignore how exploitative the show feels. A 2 season show about comedians' addiction problems and death? No analysis of why this happens, or healthy ways to combat the psychological pitfalls that these people fell into? It all just feels a bit like profiting and taking a tour of someone's death, and their health issues. Pretty insensitive.

BoJack Horseman: 1x06 Our A-Story Is A 'D' Story

The Beyoncé scene in this episode is so absurdly silly, down to the ridiculously inaccurate impression of her, that it kills me every time and has strangely become one of my favourite jokes of the show.

Killing Eve: 2x06 I Hope You Like Missionary!

Two of my favourite quotes from the show are are in this episode. One really funny one from Carolyn goes:

“I can’t stand breakfast. It’s just constant egg. Why? Who decided this?”

And another sad one from Villanelle undercover at AA “I hurt myself, I don’t feel it. I buy what I want, I don’t want it. I do what I like, I don’t like it.”

Both stick in my head.

The Bear: 2x06 Fishes

i rewatched that fork-throwing moment a couple of times. that was excellent tv, despite the downright excruciating vibes.

I will say I feel like they exaggerated the drama in the family a little bit. seems like one or two of the things that happened at the dinner table would make sense in real life, but all 3/4 of them just felt like melodrama to be honest. toxic families don't need to put on a showstopping tour de force of drama just because it's christmas

The kiss-off in this episode? Perfect reality tv. Perfect. No notes.

The Simpsons: 2x14 Principal Charming

Great episode, still remember the lines from the proposal scene.

HOWEVER. Patty was wrong to turn down a happy relationship with Skinner just because of her sister. Especially when Selma herself was desperate to do the exact opposite, to a point where she put up with Barney Gumble. Not how a healthy bond works! Take him back, Patty!

Euphoria: 2x05 Stand Still Like the Hummingbird

The Maddy, Rue and Cassie scene is something I have rewatched and rewatched. I think it’s one of my favourite scenes in television full stop. Absolutely delectable drama.

this was the first episode that I straight up could not sit down and calmly watch. Just for those last 5 minutes. Watching BoJack screw up that royally is incredibly painful.

That kind of drama is what makes this show so revolutionary as a western cartoon. I know anime has hit some significant levels of depth before, but beyond Japanese media, I’ve never seen an animated series with moments this genuinely mature and sophisticated.
