Mike Birbiglia: The Old Man and the Pool

Funny and thought-provoking. Really cool set.

Not a perfect film by any means--Daryl Hannah's character was a pretty flat "innocent dreamgirl" archetype, for example, and a lot of the rules/lore went unexplained, but I think the MST3K rule applies here--

"If you're wondering how he eats and breathes
And other science facts
Then repeat to yourself 'It's just a show,
I should really just relax.'"

Really fun movie, would recommend.

Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom

I went into this with no prior Asterix & Obelix knowledge and listened to the english dub.

That said, I don't think this is a very good movie. Some of the art design and sets were really nicely done and genuinely a treat to look at. It seemed well funded and technically well-done for the most part.

But the writing was not good. The plot felt aimless and all over the place, and the jokes usually weren't funny and very frequently relied on lazy ethnic tropes and clichés. As a newcomer to the Asterix franchise, it felt like I was missing a lot of in-jokes and references.

Anyway, I wasn't expecting much from this movie to begin with. It's not the worst movie ever made, but it's not one I would recommend either.

City of Women

Interesting to watch, but I'm not sure I really got everything it was trying to say. Or maybe it was just trying to say it's bad to treat women poorly and took way longer than it needed just to convey that point. Either way, I suspect this was more poignant and radical in 1980's Italy than it is in 2023.

I appreciated the film's more surreal moments, and thought it was artfully made, but other than the artistry of it all I'm not sure I got too much out of it.

Dead Man's Letters

Starts off really slow--don't watch this while you're tired unless you're trying to fall asleep. But ultimately Dead Man's Letters a fair portrait of humanity in the face of destruction, and a poignant warning against the use of nuclear weapons.

I liked it. A movie primarily about loneliness. It's not the most exciting movie ever, but it's not trying to be. An interesting, almost surreal glimpse into the life of someone trying to find her place and come to terms with the decisions she made in the past. I liked the artistry of it. The long, hanging shots and at times awkward delivery made this fun to watch, and provided time to think back on the characters' interactions, reflecting the protagonist's own experience as she struggles to make connections and overcome her loneliness.

The occasional hipster magician cameos were always a bit jarring but I liked this overall. An interesting look into Cuba. The people who the film crew interview and interact with are who really make this film great, seemingly blending acting with reality in a really cool way that matches the overall theme of cinema as a trick or illusion.
