The Marvels

Amazingly unhinged. One of the more enjoyable MCU films in a long time

Poor Things

Stunning, grotesque, profane and hilarious. The performances are killer, especially Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo (but everyone is good). Bizarre, yet philosophically thought-provoking dialogue with a playfulness with words. Uncomfortable gender treatment yet that's the point. Sets that look designed by Gaudi. A career high for Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone.

I get that this was more a Brooke Shields and Benjamin Bratt vehicle than Miranda Cosgrove, but what a waste of Miranda. I expected a better mother-daughter dynamic for a Mother's Day movie. Also, this felt barely like it was set in Thailand. While I don't live cheesy tourist-centric movies I expected something a bit more specific to the country than just hanging out at a resort and taking a yoga class. The landscape was gorgeous at least but felt very separate... almost like a postcard. Barely any Thai spoken. I heard at least one Thai song on the soundtrack tho. I don't expect high art from these Hallmark type of films but I want some heartwarming moments and less generic. Disappointingly bland

Society of the Snow

Even if you think you know this story, it was so well done that you feel so much -- the harrowing fear, the overwhelming despair, the bittersweet hope, the anger of the unfairness, the grief, the awe in the face of nature, the uncertainty. Excellent performances and use of the environment. Some interesting choices made to draw a line between faith, survival, community and personal moral code. I cried at the end.

Oh thank goodness Bogyeol is gonna put a stop to all the lip-synching, and Woohak knows his identity now. Deception should only be used to fool the bad dads

I don't like the Ki-ho mystery nor the probable love triangle. If it weren't for Park Eun-bin I'm not sure I'd care

Godzilla Minus One

Saw this on Xmas Day like baby Jesus intended. Godzilla Minus One was pretty great. Overall story & action was simple, straightforward giving you a bit of Jaws, Moby Dick and ID4, etc. But then there are the layers of WWII guilt, regret, grief, helplessness, nihilism, redemption. So much Japanese angst that I identified with so much. I tend to stay away from war movies cuz they hit a bit too close to home, but this one sneaked in. I cried at the end

Not Me: 1x11 Episode 11

It's so satisfying that Sean figured out this wasn't his Black. It shows he's paying attention and he can feel less like a fool since White never rejected him

Silent Night

Welp. Dunno what I expected. First things first --- no doves in this but there is a small bird which I think is a small parrot called a lovebird. That was my highlight.

It's true there's no dialogue but there's plenty of sound, and some cheating when you hear radio DJs and police scanners basically give exposition. The lack of dialogue wasn't the issue though. A big throwback to early 2000s John Woo but not even that good. Depiction of gangs is just out of touch, women are just props for the men. Best parts were the prep and training for revenge, which was unintentionally funny but enjoyable. Bad melodramatic moments that also made me laugh. Big ending fight was hella anticlimactic.

The Eighth Sense: 1x10 The Club

Definitely in my Top 10 BLs. I loved the natural dialogue rhythms and interactions. Settings and cinematography were gorgeous. Well acted with great central chemistry. Although a couple supporting characters were annoying, I appreciated that not most of the female characters were actually kind and really charming. So rare in BL! Very satisfying resolution if a bit quick. Add to that an amazing soundtrack, and this has become a new classic.

Extra-ordinary You: 1x08 Dried Squid’s Warning

Kyung is a jerk and abusive, using the same tactics as his bullying father. I hope since he's becoming conscious he breaks free and realizes he doesn't be need to please dad and therefore doesn't need to bother Danoh anymore. While I so hold him accountable for his actions since he's just a teenager I hope he can learn to overcome his issues and break the cycle of abuse

Quiz Lady

On one hand this felt like a '90s throwback. On the other hand, the dialogue and performances were just so good they elevated this to be a damn funny movie. Sandra Oh is great whenever she does comedy, and Awkwafina is nice and anxious, but gets one scene to totally let go. Some gleefully bizarre supporting characters from great actors including Tony Hale and Holland Taylor are great. I enjoyed the soft villains. Will Ferrell gives a nicely understated performance. Just a good time with a sweet note at the end (and bittersweet cameo by the late Paul Reubens)

All of Us Are Dead: 1x11 Episode 11

A few thoughts ... yes On-jo's dad sacrificing himself made no sense. He could have easily secured the tennis courts from the outside

General's suicide-- a lot of people complaining he did no wrong so why kill himself. Agreed that he had to make a difficult decision to contain the spread. But that doesn't stop the weight of that many deaths on your psyche. He knows the enormity of what he did, and in the end he is just human ... it would be worse if he felt zero grief about it all

Hmm... I just assume Cheong-san is still alive. My thinking is if you only get one bite from Gwinam you can get his immunity, but if he chows down on you (i.e. Nayeon, archery guy) then you go full zombie

Strong Woman Do Bong Soon: 1x14 A Prelude to the Battle

Glad that Bong Soon got her powers back through the power of selfless love. The very dumb way that the villain tricked her shouldn't have counted. Also, I felt that removing her powers would have upset the refreshing gender dynamic with Min-hyuk.

Strong Woman Do Bong Soon: 1x11 Timing

This is the point in the series when I got fed up with all the annoying cartoonish characters -- the mom, the gangsters, the high schoolers, and the homophobic portrayal of a gay man -- to the point where I started fast-forwarding through all their scenes. All that's left are the central 3, dad, twin brother, best friend, cops and Blue Beard kidnapper

All of Us Are Dead: 1x06 Episode 6

I know they're teenagers, bút On-jo just speculated that bully Gwinam could be immune ... so why does no one else consider that now Namra could be immune and therefore potentially key to creating a vaccine? A great reason NOT to kill her. Hell she could potentially help revert Jimin's parents! And the teen mom. The kids at the daycare. Basically anyone who's turned but not killed.
