A show involving Malcom X as a main char is INHERENTLY a political endeavor.
If you’re racist or just here for another Scorsese-esque/Sopranos-style show, well, you ended up in the wrong place.
Please, if you’re going to comment on a show which is literally centered around one of the biggest, most influential black rights movement EVER and your comment is “the black guy is too angry!” do everyone a favor: turn off the show and do anything else. Preferably read Malcolm’s autobiography. The movie with Denzel is a mostly-acceptable substitute.
My only criticism of the show is it downplays the (admitted) involvement of the FBI/CIA in Malcolm’s assassination. It essentially puts the blame on the Nation of Islam, who are not blameless, but come on now. That’s like blaming Osama for 9/11 but never adding that the CIA and Saudi Arabia funded and enabled Osama for decades. It’s kind of omitting a HUGE fact that changes the color of everything. When you know that the US government’s intelligence and law enforcement agencies conspired to escalate and carry out the murder of one of the most well-spoken, intelligent, and respected (by blacks and whites and everyone) black leaders in U.S. history, it changes things quite a lot!
Great miniseries.
I laughed, I cried, I was horrified, I was reverent throughout this season
This show took what is definitely a trope at this point (white guy in Asian countries) and sort of flips it on its head. Instead of being fed a false narrative about how crafty, or whatever, the European(s) are, we see them being manipulated to the end for the use of the natives and its only revealed at the end that the guy who you're led to think was special or important was just another clown for entertainment
Rewatched this after like 15 years. Plot was good and what I remembered basically. Humor holds up.
Sentimental movie that might make you tear up a little
Insane episode. It was ripping me apart with the tension around her offing herself. The image from last episode and what a proper "seconding" looked like applied to a mental image of Anjin doing that to Mariko but knowing he wouldn't be able to properly do it like a trained samurai...
