Django & Django: Sergio Corbucci Unchained

Very interesting documentary about Sergio Corbucci, the "second best spaghetti western director", less epic and much more violent than Sergio Leone. Tarantino speaks throughout the film, giving his point of view as an expert of the genre.

Johnny Got His Gun

What a great, anti-militarist film! So bitter and beautiful.

Annette

I saw several films by Carax (my favourite being "Les amants du Pont Neuf", wonderful!) and I know his peculiar style. Yet this "Annette" sounds like a wrong film. And I use the word "sounds" by choice, because the problem, I believe, is in the soundtrack: too boring, not enough songs and too many recitative parts. I appreciate the effort, the originality, but in my opinion the result is not convincing.

New Order

I think Nuevo Orden is a beautiful, merciless, cruel and necessary film, so good in depicting what can happen if (when?) there's so much social injustice in a country as complex as Mexico. Almost everyone is bad (rich, poor, but especially the army), and the few good ones do not end well... It reminds of past Latin American dictatorships and it shows no hope. I love Franco's films, and this (perhaps his more pessimistic) is my favourite one.

The Chosen Ones

The main character is Sofìa, a 14-year-old girl who lives in Tijuana who falls in love with the wrong boy and gets caught in a prostitution racket. It's a harsh, sad story that resembles the truth. The non-professional actors are great and there are at least two memorable scenes: the first is the "repetition" of the father's birthday and the second is when we see the customers' faces and bodies and we hear the noises of their intercourses. Great movie, not for everyone.

The Good Girls

"Las niñas bien" (The girls from wealthy families), whose title is translated into English with a not-so-accurate and too generic "The good girls", is an excellent film. It portrays the Mexican economical crisis in 1982, seen from the point of view of rich families from the upper class. It's a well written, well shot and well acted film (the leading actress is superb in her subtle interpretation), a social satire which perfectly represents a pivotal period in Mexican history.
