Raw

Julia Ducournau's debut Raw offers a unique coming-of-age story with some truly gruesome bits. Set in a veterinary school, it follows Justine, a vegetarian first-year student who develops a disturbing taste for meat. To me, the film's visuals and strong performances with a quite solid storyline created a captivating yet a bit challenging viewing experience.

The film's rather slow pacing left me wanting a bit more action and quicker development in certain scenes, but that wasn't the only thing that made this a challenging watch. The film's explicitly gross scenes make you feel uneasy and are certainly a turn-off for some.

While it is not for everyone, Raw is a fresh take on horror, and I did like it overall. The film is bold, kept me interested throughout, and I think it is worth seeing. It was just a bit different from what I expected.

Under Paris

I see what they tried to do, but it doesn't quite work. Inspired by Don't Look Up, the movie mixes shark attacks with political satire, aiming to critique the Olympics and French politicians, and it tries to say something about the environment too. The execution just isn't quite there.

While some parts of the movie are visually impressive, a lot of it feels silly. The tone and story are all over the place. It's not scary enough to be a good horror movie, and not clever enough to deliver its message effectively. Like Stephen King, I did enjoy some of the last scenes, but there are too many dumb moments overall.

Although it is watchable and has some decent ideas, mostly it's a mess, and I'm not too excited for a sequel. However, I'd still watch if they make one.
