It's the transformation of a somewhat normal girl into a ruthless murderer. I particularly enjoyed how unappealing the lover was; I haven't read the novel, but I thought it underlined the main goal of the protagonist: relief from boredom and social norms. Even if she evades prison at the end, a return to the status quo seemed like a fitting punishment for her, and it contrasted nicely with the fate of her lower-class co-conspirators.
