It's the story of a twisted man on a rescue mission, and he's driven there by his demons. Startling, passionate and intense, the film is a series of long, winding passages punctuated with exclamation points. "You Were Never Really Here" is the sort of film you want to applaud when it ends.

I really loved, period, Joaquin Phoenix in Inherent Vice, and judging from the trailer, this was supposed to be a hectic action thriller with him in a completely different setting. I was pleased seeing it took quite an interesting turn, giving Joaquin an unsteady, undecided role in a story weirdly told.
Unfortunately, as much as I really enjoy films where you could or even have to fill in gaps yourself, this one seemed to get stuck in trying to heave itself onto the arthouse genre. Inconclusive hints, weak and not fully formed ideas of a background story, but after all the whole film couldn't please in its weirdness, and oddly didn't make sense on either an emotional or the story telling level. It left us with a lack of satisfaction, an experience of needless violence and blood, and a lot of questions, but not in a good way.
