The Cloverfield Paradox 2018

I was excited because I loved Cloverfield! But this cliche filled movie was just terrible.
Except from saying the word "Cloverfield" a few times, There is nothing "Cloverfield" about this movie.
Many unexplained plot lines... And ugh... Tam...
Everyone on the ship talks English, Tam understands English...
She must, Since they have long conversations and Schmidt doesn't translate it.
Seems like Tam refuses to talk English and speaks Chinese instead!
It annoyed me, because it just didn't make any sense.

@sopherian The Tam thing bugged me so much also. At first, I thought she didn't speak/understand English, but as the movie progressed, they made it very clear that English was fine for her. So, that made her character very arrogant for speaking Chinese-only when everyone else has settled on English.

@ultramookie this is exactly what I thought too mookie! What a shitty movie...

@sopherian I would call that behavior pretty realistic. It's easier to talk in your native tongue, express your thoughts and feelings. Given that your conversation partner can understand that language, it can help using the language you're most confident in - even if it might be rude to other people nearby that doesn't speak that language. Emotions can easily be misunderstood when using other languages. I had conversations, where we both used a different language, knowing the other one can understand it. That makes talking much easier and more natural.

To me the conversations (not the dialogue, but the acting) felt really good.

@sopherian she could have just been awful at pronouncing English, and everyone obviously understood Chinese, so they all compromised.
