Really enjoyed this one, here's my random thoughts...

  • That was a great mix of crazy and FUN.
  • Tig Notaro steals every scene she's in and I want to see much more of her.
  • Absolutely loved the universal translator going wrong and everyone speaking different languages.
  • The conversation about going back to old fashioned screens for communications felt a bit shoe-horned in, but was still appreciated.
  • Number One was interesting, I'm surprised she appeared so briefly.
  • Love any scene where the characters are all discussing things around a table. Feels very Star Trek.
  • The Saru plot became surprisingly emotional, and I thought the scenes between him and Burnham were very strong.
  • Tilly and Stamets singing Space Oddity was gorgeous and delightful.
  • I don't care about the Spock plot at all now, just do more fun stuff like this.

@lefthandedguitarist My problem with Saru plot
is that it was pretty obvious he wouldn't actually die, so it wasn't touching or emotional but pointless, especially if you've seen the Saru webisode where all of his backstory is explained. Why was it obvious? The new show runners aim to please the crowds with all that old Star Trek references, and this felt very much like 80's-90s Star Trek where there were plenty of episodes where some of the main cast was supposedly doomed just to be saved in the last moment.
That may have worked in the 90s, but in this post GoT world it just seems outdated.

Also, all the 20th century pop culture (Prince, Bowie) references seem out of place and kind of pull me out of the plot. Surely two people in 23rd century would know all the lyrics to Space Oddity.
