The writers keep searching for something for Archie to do. He's the lead character and he is barely even involved in any of the actual plot; he's too busy pursuing music and then football and now boxing. It's like the writers don't know what to do with him to keep him occupied while Jughead and Betty move the plot forward (barely). Also the thinly veiled Apocalypse Now reference was a bit Much.
