[6.8/10] I am tired of Harry Osborn’s vacillating from episode to episode. He hates Spider-Man. Then he forgives Spider-Man. Then he hates Peter. Then he loves Peter. Tnen he’s mad again. Then they’re cool again. Over and over it goes, and with each time they swing between being friends and enemies, the less impact these twists and turns have.

It also weakens the episode to make it just one giant fight against the Sinister Five/Six for most of the runtime. Sure, the animation is well done when Spidey fights Vulture, Steel Spider, Rhino, and the Spider-Slayer yet again, but the set pieces aren’t good enough to sustain twenty minutes of constant action. They also set Spidey’s quipping into overdrive for this one, which got annoying after a while.

I’m also a little tired of this version of Doc Ock to be honest. His scheme seems really convoluted, but I guess mind-controlling Spider-Man was the key to him taking over the city? It’s pretty basic megalomania without much of an interesting wrinkle. Guess it’s time to remind myself once again that this is a kids show.

Still, I liked the third act a lot. Harry becoming The Hobgoblin and going genuinely heroic to save the day is a nice role reversal. The mind control is a good way to make Harry believe his deepest suspicions were right (with a little nudge from his dad). But Peter snapping out of it when he realizes Harry’s on the other end of his punches is a nice way to cement the depth of their friendship even after all of this (and it fits with a reciprocal moment from the Ultimate Spider-Man show.) Plus, the impressionistic bent they use to show Peter’s epiphany is a neat touch.

Still, then it’s back to more static punches and blasts. You at least have Spidey using his wits to remove the Sinister Six’s mind control chips to get them to turn on Otto. Still, it ends with another suggestion that Harry’s unsure how to feel about his best friend with his dad whispering lies into his ear, and I’m just tired of the back and forth.

Overall, the Peter/Harry amterial is still the strongest part of this show, but the show’s gone to the well too many times, and the action that fills up the rest of the episode isn’t good enough to make up for it.
