Spider-Man 2 2004

The Good:

  • Spider-Man 2 is a great example of a sequel done just right - it's bigger and bolder compared to the original; it improves on the story, characters and action and it's a natural continuation of the story that began in Spider-Man.
  • Visually it’s more impressive than the predecessor and it largely holds up today.
  • This film also features what is arguably the greatest Spidey film villain so far - Dock Ock is fearsome, memorable and surprisingly likeable
  • Alfred Molina in the greatest role of his career, creating a believable villain and a likeable character. He is far from a simple or one-dimensional villain and has a satisfying story arc.
  • Filled with memorable moments - the hospital scene, the bank robbery, THAT train sequence and the final fight, to name just a few.
  • The symbolism hidden within the story of the film gives the story much needed depth, while the relationships between the central characters evolve greatly from the first movie.
  • The action scenes and all scenes involving Molina are the greatest parts of the film.

The Bad:

  • Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst still feel awkward and bland and they still lack on-screen chemistry together
  • It annoys me how the romantic relationship between Peter and MJ constantly swing back and forth without ever actually getting anywhere

Verdict:

Still one of the best superhero movies, Spider-Man 2 is a sequel worthy of its action scenes, its strong symbolism and its amazing villain.
