The League: Season 7

7x05 The Bully

[6.2/10] This is an example of an episode with a lot of good and funny ideas that can’t really pay them off, and so goes off the rails after a while.

Case-in-point, Kevin picking up lines from his daughter’s bully to use on the group is an amusing conceit, but by the time he’s playing catch with the kid and debating the finer points of “Feces Peanut Butter cups” just to get caught by Ellie, it feels like a dumb sitcom conclusion.

Similarly, I like Andre not realizing that he’s bullied relentlessly and thinking that he gives as good as he gets, only to realize he needs to fight back. But it doesn't really go anywhere and him trying to coach Ellie only to get beaten up is more broad nonsense.

I do like Taco inadvertently turning his “Little Brother” program into a faux-Dickensian workhouse for local bullies, and his ridiculous demands of them are funny, but his whole “drawing my own erotica” thing is pretty gross and unpleasant when it gets intermeshed with the MacArthurs trying to teach Ellie about the birds and the bees.

That said, the closing bit with the pop-up book got an uncomfortable laugh out of me, and I looove the return of Pam from the Rafi/Dirty Randy episode, so I suppose it’s not all bad.

Overall, this one started strong, but couldn’t figure out where to go with some good ideas.
