As someone who's read the books I was really looking forward to this but unfortunately the series falls short... Too many things have been changed or are missing. Vital information is simply revealed way too soon, you don't even get a chance to piece the clues together and figure things out for yourself. There is no mystery, no suspense. I'm not satisfied with the portrayal of some of the characters either (Lyra, Lee, Yorek) The opening sequence is amazing though!
The Golden Compass movie had it's flaws but overall it is much closer to the first book.
