The Mandalorian 2019

The Mandalorian started out OK, but ended up as some half-baked, lazily written show that exist merely to lure parents to justify a Disney+ subscription. Kids get the usual Disney contents, moms get Baby Yoda, dads get Star Wars nerdy reference. The show almost feels like being made by a bunch of fanfiction writers with familiarity of the setting but zero sense of screen writing.

Nothing wrong with liking it, it's just the show appears to be all style and no substance.

Storyline shows no complexity at all. In fact, most of them are fillers. You can skip 4 of 8 episodes and you'll still understand the story just fine. Characters are completely uninteresting. None of them are developed. None of them had nuances: protagonists are morally good heroes; antagonists are one dimensional evils. The show relies only on a cute muppet and flashy action, but has zero substance. Had a potential great world-building with some details, but they chose to abandon it for rule of cool (and cute).

The "it's Star Wars, so it'll be simple" excuse commonly said by the series' defenders doesn't hold up if you actually consider other Star Wars titles such as Knights of the Old Republic, Republic Commando, Jedi Academy, Thrawn trilogy, the original and Tartakovsky's Clone Wars, and so on. Those titles are known for having remarkable storytelling; something that The Mandalorian doesn't have for its poverty of creative vision.

@xaliber Yeah skip most of the episode, like that you can write this kind of comment... hahaha I would say you to watch all of them at least twice... Perhaps like this you will see that there are lot of more than just a "show that appears to be all style and no substance" !!!

@xaliber I think 4 is a little harsh but I can understand where you coming from. I do think it could have been better. As my comment on the show says "first episode did not disappoint" but I feel like the story just went down exactly the same path everything in Hollywood normally goes. However, I would rather watch that than CSI New York so .... :)

@xaliber I'm glad I'm not the only one, I agree with everything you wrote here. I was so bored by this showed that I didn't even bother to continue watching it.

@xaliber But... Star Wars is a VERY basic opera. The entire franchise is just one dimensional characters lining up either on the good or the evil side, then some characters operating on self interest so they are neither good nor evil. I think that it is folly to expect more from the Star Wars Franchise. Now something like Game of Thrones has what you're looking for.

@breezytm there are plenty of good series out there. From something like The Sopranos, to The Boys, The Expanse, Raised by Wolves, etc.

@lordmayo Did you intentionally not read the last paragraph? KoTOR, Clone Wars, and Thrawn trilogy are ALL Star Wars titles. ALL don't suck like this one.

@xaliber What a terrible take. The show apparently is so simple that it went straight over your head lol

@xaliber your review holds true even now when the 2nd season has ended, really sad that they don't want to bother with complex worlds anymore...

@xaliber Have you since changed your opinion after Season 2? Or is it that you didn't get past 1 season? I agree with some of your assessment of S1. But, S2 is redeeming for exactly those reasons.

@seanmsu aw, looks like I hurt a hardcore fan's ego. It's a product, not your life. Don't take it personally, champ.

@sreecharan93 I tried watching S2 pilot but it still felt like a poo sprayed with strong perfume. Maybe one day I'll try to finish it and see if my opinion changes.

@xaliber I'd say the "filler" is kind of the point. I'm actually almost annoyed when the main story arc pops in. Then again I love stuff like X-Files, Lone Wolf and Cub and Star Trek, so I'm used to episodic TV and very happy when I find a show that caters to this. This need for an overarching story that's constantly in the center was created by binge/streaming culture and I really appreciated having a show where I wouldn't be completely lost when the second season hit. That's why I dropped The Expanse (great show in general); I didn't remember who all those god damn people were.

@xaliber I really agree-- even having personally enjoyed the experience overall, the direction it takes after the first season (if not the first few episodes) is kind of disappointing. It's like it was almost going to go new places and tell new stories, but nope-- gotta yank it all back to the main collection of IP and have fanservice cameos all over the place. As fun as they can be to watch, they're also pretty shallow and dry.

The entire conceit of a lone wolf constantly questing to find a safe place to drop off this pesky kid could be an endless source of new adventures and settings. I adored the connection they formed, but ultimately I'm left feeling disappointed at what else could have been with this show.

Seeing where the Book of Boba Fett goes, it's clear Disney was just looking for another MCU-style money tree. Can't blame them, but that's not ultimately where art comes from. :/ Just fun diversions.

@xaliber It's basically a procedural show with a thick red plotline. But these days everything has to be like the biggest story with twists every 15 minutes to be good and successful right? In a way this show is remarkably refreshing in bringing back an old fomular that worked very well for some of the best shows ever made. If you're a true Star Wars fan, you're interested in the differing interactions every episode. The plot is also great imo and it ticks all the basic Star Wars needs. You're wrong when you say that Star Wars being simple is an "excuse" ... Star Wars is simple, that one of the core elements of the entire franchise. It's good vs. evil. Very Black and White. That's the essence which is perfectly captured with this show. And on top comes the production quality - almost entirely without a green screen which is just phenomenal. Maybe you just exprected something different and were disappointed of the outcome but just try to take it for what it is and enjoy it because its one of THE best things ever coming out of this franchise.

very well put the episodes seem to have more filler than plot to the next episode.

@xaliber You have a point in all your saying... buuuut... it's the "easyness" and lack of complexity that hooks me... its sooo so enjoyable to watch, sorry that doesn't work for you ;)

@xaliber Further confirmed with whatever Season 3 was. Objectively lazy and sloppy, which seems to really appeal to some people I guess.
