Locke 2014

Is it possible that a film with only one on-screen character, who is in his car for the entirety of the film, could somehow work? Tom Hardy portrays a regular everyday Joe with a not so interesting job that he still cares about, a wife and family who seem utterly normal, and some mistakes you could understand anyone making. Yet, despite what is set up to be nothing interesting, this 90 minute glimpse into a person's life as they struggle to deal with a consequence of a low moment of judgment is fascinating. It puts a very relatable struggle with personal morality, guilt, and navigating a crossroads on the screen without glorifying it or making it more grandiose than it is. This is a slice of life at its most honest.
