Dolittle 2020

Universal screws up yet another classic with Dolittle, a goofball children’s film with no heart. Robert Downey Jr. takes on the role of the good doctor who talks to animals and has become a recluse following the death his wife, but is called upon when the Queen falls deathly ill to find the mysterious Eden Tree whose healing properties is the only thing that can save her. The main problem is Downey, who is just not a likable or sympathetic character with his off-putting, antisocial behavior. Also, there are too many animal characters, and the villains are caroonishly evil. Still, the CGI is impressive and there are some fun action scenes. Young audiences may enjoy Dolittle for its zany silliness, but there’s little else going for it.
