Meet Me in St. Louis 1944

The film that introduced Judy Garland to her future husband, director Vincente Minnelli, Meet Me in St. Louis is an entertaining big-budget family musical. The story follows the Smith family at the turn of the 20th century leading up to the St. Louis World Fair as the eldest daughter attempts to elicit a marriage proposal, the second eldest falls in love with the boy next door, and the youngest tries to prove her mettle to the neighborhood kids. Garland gives a standout performance and is backed by a strong supporting cast. And, the songs are whimsical and fun, featuring stuch beloved classics as “Meet Me in St. Louis, Louis,” “The Trolley Song,” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” Yet the film’s not without its problems, as the plot is rather aimless and the romances predictable. Launching MGM’s golden age of musicals, Meet Me in St. Louis is a charming film (flaws and all) that still holds up.
