I recently rewatched this after a couple of years. I felt like I was able to understand the story more now. John Thorntons character is truly admirable for he is a self made man who cares for his workers and is a reasonable man. I honestly recommend watching this for John Thornton should not be missed. I must say this: Margret Hale's character wasn't my favorite. She did have some sort of character development but still. A bit of a spoiler that just makes the drama worth it: When John proposed to Margret, that scene is by far the most amazing proposal I have ever seen. The words he used we're just wow.
