Utopia

Season 1

This is the best season of television I've seen since the second season of Succession. Utopia's first series is brilliant. A masterpiece. The premiere grips you and doesn't let go, even at the very end. The show is constantly presenting you with new revelations which constantly keeps you on your toes. The characters evolve in very interesting and massive ways in the six episodes this first series is given. The show is brutal and not necessarily because it's grotesque. It often pulls back during moments of horrific violence, or in the case of episode 3's opener shies away from showing the violence which almost makes it more horrifying. This brings me to the technical aspects. Particularly the cinematography and music. The cinematography is fantastic, it's restrained but very stylized. The colors are so saturated and vibrant which I normally wouldn't like but it fits the atmosphere and it's headed extremely well, so it works. The music is so weird and so memorable. It fits the show perfectly but it also stands on its own as a really awesome and haunting album. I love listening to it myself, seperated from the show. This is really such a brilliant and quite overlooked piece of television. I hope the second series doesn't ruin it.
