The Americans

Season 4

The weakest season so far IMO (watching this for the second time round). Seasons 1-2 were great, a really good espionage drama with great story lines and two superb actors playing the lead roles (Elizabeth is far more credible as a ruthless Soviet agent than the wide-eyed, forever exhaling through pursed lips, maniac CIA operative that is Carrie from Homeland). Season 3 started to lose it a bit though and season 4 for me hits an all time low point with way, WAY too much screen time devoted to their troublesome daughter Paige. It's a storyline that probably needed to be included but not to the extent it is, particularly given the son Henry is almost totally ignored story wise.

Doesn't help that Holly Taylor, the actress playing Paige, seems capable of only one facial expression and one portrayal of mood. Thus we are not only obliged to watch what has now become somewhat of a soap (Spy Family anyone?), with too much screen time devoted to what essentially should be a fringe storyline, the actress in question is also, sadly, as dull as dishwater. Indeed dear Paige has attracted a lot of flak as one TV's most annoying teenagers and I've seen a lot of comments along the lines of Taylor playing the part and portraying the character really well. Personally I disagree, her repertoire is far too limited for her to make the character even remotely interesting (I mean, how many times do we have to listen to hear bleat "but you lied to me!") plus of course, the main point for me is, I don't actually WANT to watch a series about a sulky, self-pitying and mostly ungrateful teenage brat, I want to watch an espionage drama.

Hoping for a pick up in Season 5!
