This is SO much better than the original 'Morse'. "Morse" seems pompous and so flawed in the original series. Here you see his origins (obviously), his struggles within and out of the service he joined, the rebuttal of ways to excel (the belief that fact and honesty go beyond the "echelons" of the job"). What isn't explained is his lack of companionship. Morse and "Miss Thursday" seem destined to be; but not to be. That's the most enigmatic* thing about "Morse". * I consider "enigmatic" complimentary. Others may deem it as "fucking Infuriating"
