What a letdown it turned out to be in the end! Still, it was a fun story to follow. A little mystery, a little drama, a little action, and some decent acting and cool sets. (I watched this episode in isolation because it's "starring the computer", so the computer room being a location was the reason why I saw it.)

This is the first episode of Route 66 that I've seen, and in fact I'm not even sure whether I had heard of the show before. The episode did make me want to see more of it. But I'm not familiar with what the show's usual tone is, so I don't know if the humour is specific to this episode. However, I will say that it's rare that I watch TV from the sixties and see humour that has aged this well. Playing with the Hollywood cliché of the private detective agency was the highlight of the episode for me. Take this hilarious quote by a furious agency boss, after one of his operatives accomplishes a particularly effectful car parking maneuver at the scene:

It's too much television, that's what's doing it. You men are seeing too many flamboyant examples of private detection. Bear operatives and Bear drivers do not slam on the brakes in order to make a showy entrance. I hope that's quite clear.

I'm not going into spoilers about the plot and its resolution, it just left me pretty underwhelmed, and the ending definitely aged a lot more poorly than many other parts of this episode.
