The Girl Before: Season 1

1x01 Episode 1

So they actually have applicants who agree to pay for a house which they are not allowed to use?

I mean, one of the rule is "no books".

"Hard to imagine" - Really?!? I would expect people to die in a house where the stairs have no railing...

The show tries to rationalize why the women agree to the absolutely crazy rules. I don't think they are very convincing.
It would have been better to not give a reason at all than the "I've been robbed (and raped)" story.

Being robbed and being raped is both mainly about a loss of control (to different degrees) - I don't think the normal thing to do is to move into a house with insane restrictions, where people come by unannounced to check if you live accordingly.

I think the show is trying to dance at too many parties at once here.

I am in agreement with the totality of your comment, but I wanted to reply with another view. From my life experience, I don’t find it odd at all that someone may choose, after a highly traumatic event where part of it involved their autonomy and decision making, to live a drastically different way and to want to place the majority of decisions made into the hands of someone els, or into creating a rigid structure to their lives via rules. The bigger issue I have with the story is why in the world they’d choose to rely on the decisions and rules of this architect they’ve never met and then barely spoke to during the interview. The desire to create order from traumatized chaos would come with a strong urge to obtain that order from sources and/or people you believed you could trust and that you would have a bond strong enough with to believe they have your best interest at heart, so if they’re giving you rules you’d only need to trust them to want to follow the rules, since you believe you cannot trust yourself. I would have found this episode much more believable had there been at least some amount of connection building between the women and the architect to go “Okay . . . they’re still living in Trauma Brain and now he’s done XYZ and they believe he’s going to help them.”
