As you might have heard, the final battle sucks, but the philosophy and the episode surrounding it make up for the fumble. I think what it says at the end is that, although Asura is called "the Kishin", I don't think he has the soul of a Kishin. He sees the hypocrisy in the good vs evil theme. Nothing is purely one-sided and there is a constant internal struggle we all face that decides whether or not someone succumbs to evil. As it was demonstrated with Stein, Stein knew his thoughts were evil as far as society was concerned but it stemmed from curiosity. Only when he stopped suppressing his madness was he able to face it and come to terms with it. Dominant souls like Death and Asura can help or hinder our path towards goodness, but we can still win or lose no matter the case. Also, I've never seen a show end with the first ending song before. It was obviously nostalgic, but it also reminded me of how far the show had come since the first episodes and all the interesting ideas that were explored in the show. It's about the journey not the destination. I would like to see stories of where these characters ended up and how they got there.
