Sex and the City: Season 2

2x10 The Caste System

Center of this episode is the ongoing relationship between Carie and Mr. Big. I like how their love holds this shows together that otherwise too often tells inconsequential and isolated mini plots (I guess that's the idea of a weekly column in the NYT I guess). This makes this episode okay-ish - the rest has obvious flaws.

This idea of a caste system (rich vs. poor; New Amsterdam vs. New York City) is a recurring topic in this show. But again, this is only discussed very vaguely. Probably the writers realize that the microcosm in this show ain't very representative to the US and certainly not to NYC's motley society, but they are not at the the point to admit this obvious flaw: this show is about white, rich people's problems. People who seem to bother about shoes, art, clothes, interior design and dining out while totally ignoring that there are other people with totally different – more relatable – problems. But "other people" don't really happen in this show. And when they encounter someone different like Miranda's barkeeper (who isn't exactly representing the margin of society either) or someone even more New Amsterdami-ish like Carrie's host these girls don't really know how to handle this situation with decency.
