Review by Brian Umbaugh

Topside 2022

That was a seriously uncomfortable watch, but I consider it a well-done movie because I cared what happened to the characters. There wasn't a lot of "action", per se, but the events unfolded in a way that created a lot of tension. I felt the actors did a great job, especially Celine Held, who wrote, starred and also directed this picture. Child actor Zhalia Farmer was not asked to do a lot, but did her job well for a kid. I had seen Jared Abraham before in Travelers, and I was about to applaud his role as a pimp/dealer/hustler (which he did), but he made one proposition that soured me on the character.

The good:
** I haven't seen too many movies that create so much tension with so little action. It was frantic, but still a slow burn. Crazy.
** While I don't know anything about the lifestyle depicted, it seemed like it would be very realistic. It broke my heart to watch.
** Writing, directing, and starring in a movie often means it's too grandiose to enjoy or too broken to hire anyone famous. Not this one. I figure Celine Held just wanted to make sure her character was not over- or underdone.
** The ending was heartbreaking as well, but also quite understandable.

The bummers:
-- I couldn't give this movie the rating it might have deserved because I could never watch it again. It is indeed worth the watch, but prepare for a buzzkill.
-- I wanted to know a little more of Nikki's backstory. How the hell did she end up like this?
