An above average Batman movie. And Batman was always my favorite vigilante franchise anyway.

The cons:

  • Too long (had to watch this in two parts - when did movies become that long?)
  • I want the old batmobile back (this one looks too Grand Torino)
  • I want to see better gadgets in general - wasn't it always the point that Wayne is not a super hero but uses all this awesome technology from the corporation's R&D department?
  • I don't need the Catwoman love story. If that was Clooney maybe - but Pattinson isn't the most liekeable Batman.
  • The movie is held back by the low PG score: dialogues could be more explicit, violence could be more graphic [although I usually don't like excessive violence in movies] - the more A-Team like approach (=lots of violence but nobody is ever bleeding) feels strangely disconnected to the dark cinematography
  • Catwoman could be depicted even sexier. Usually I don't like to see women objectified in such a way in movies but - hello? - that's Catwoman, right? She has chosen this character herself
  • The Penguin looks too normal. He also needs a costume of some sort and needs to move more clumsy (well, like a penguin - otherwise a good job by Farrell). Wasn't that always part of the fun we had with Gotham City's odd characters?
  • The story isn't innovative, is it? I mean basically we already know most of the story from previous movies. And Batman is "just" another iteration of Nolan's tortured Batman, right?

The pros:

  • The almost always exciting score (mostly during suspenseful scenes). Plus, is that Nirvana? Long time no hear.
  • Pattinson! He encapsulates this guy in the shadows probably better than everyone else before him [I have to admit that I miss playboy Bruce though]. Who would have thought that? Plus, he got the chin
  • They don't retell the origins story in a separate chapter. Even those who don't know the Wayne family story get the the idea
  • Awesome cinematography. It's incredible dark but they know how to use this in their favor. Wonderful colors. Menacing shadows. Awesome rain. Nice camera work
  • The first 15 minutes
  • The design and atmosphere of the Iceberg Club (what a revealing name - party like it's the Berghain)
  • Close combat scenes (like it's Daredevil memorial day. And he really takes some hits - I appreciate that he's human after all)
  • The Riddler. As soon as he takes off his mask, this guy is just great.
  • The political aspect: The end is clearly about excessive gun accessibility in the U.S. and how social media can radicalize average people. But it's not "on the nose" or "woke preaching".

Could perhaps have been an 8/10 but I'll deduct one point for it's excessive duration.
