From director Doug Liman comes the science-fiction thriller Chaos Walking. When a scout from a colony ship crashes on a planet where men’s thoughts are physically projected, the leader of one of the settlements sees her as a threat, and sensing the danger she’s in, she attempt to escape and gets help from a young farm boy. Starring Tom Holland, Daisy Ridley, and Mads Mikkelson, the cast is pretty good and delivers strong performances. And Liman does an impressive job at creating tension and suspense, and at visualizing the thoughts. The storytelling however, is rather poor and the pacing can be painfully slow (especially in the beginning). Chaos Walking explores some interesting concepts and has some exciting actions, but its ambitions are greater than what it’s able to achieve.
