“Top Gun” was a terrible movie back in the day, and the fact that this sequel just aimed at doing the exact same things with modern techniques wasn’t exactly encouraging. The difference is that this time there is a clear objective, the direction is solid, the characters are likable, and you can finally understand what the hell is going on on-screen.
The plot goes on autopilot (pun intended), and it’s all strictly limited to the bare minimum needed for an action blockbuster. Yet, this happens to be one of the most lightheartedly entertaining movies I have seen in a while. Even when it strictly remakes scenes and situations from the first movie, the nostalgia factor is hardly on the nose, and the training sections really helped feel involved in the actual mission once it started. I know nothing about aviation but I was never left behind. We will all forget about it in less than a decade, but for now, it’s an action flick to spend quality time on.
