Star Trek: Season 2

2x02 Who Mourns for Adonais?

McCoy and Kirk discussing the dating choices of the young Lieutenant (and indicating that she possibly can't continue to work in her current role when in a relationship) is painful. Hello?! She's right there with you on the bridge. She can hear you! And it doesn't stop there: Later in this episode she's reduced to a love interest and Kirk won't stop interfering with her "dating choices" as if she had no say. She isn't helpful because she's a scientist (specialized in classics and relics). She's helpful because she's beautiful and can be bait. Admittedly, she's ´still an officer and under Kirk's command and she isn't allowd to neglect her duties by irrationally falling into (mad) love with Apollo (not that love-sick Scottie behaves less hot-headed). And since she's in a unique position to influence Apollo, it's only fair that Kirk uses her. But ultimately it all feels very paternalistic. It's up to one calm headed MALE captain who talks sense into this mad and overly-emotional woman and she obeys. And of course, in the end, it's she who cries (what can only be described as some sort of Stockholm syndrome given the hostage situation the Enterprise and the away team were caught in).

That gigantic face/hand floating in space is stupid. As stupid as it was in TNG's Where Silence Has Lease btw. The general premise ain't totally rubbish though: why shouldn't our stories about deities have a true core that has been transformed into myths and religion over the millennia? It's a possibility ..... Despite the overall silliness of this episode and it's over the top histrionics, it's quite entertaining. I don't even know why. I can't look away.

PS: Was that title referenced in one of DS9's funniest episodes Who Mourns for Morn? Morn used to be quite a ladies' man too. I wonder how many people understand what Adonais actually means and refers to? Not many I'd guess. Was that perhaps different in the 1960s? Were people back then better versed in classic mythology, religion and literature? Or did this title always needed an explanation?

PS2: why do they keep treating Uhura like that? Last season she was forced to sit in this awkward twisted position with no space for her legs under the console. Now, she's forced to sit on the console so that we can see even more of her (arguably beautiful) lower body parts? At least the electrician scene shows her potential. Carolyn is also forced to wear an extremely frivolous dress. That's at least a (more or less) accurate depiction of Greek fashion. (Though I'm not immune to eye candy myself: she really looks stunning). It would all be more sexist if Apollo didn't sport a sexy dress himself. I can totally picture this perfectly tanned and waxed guy in a gay adult movie or something. That's at least how I imagine gay porn.

PS3: I like Pavel. He's a good addition to the cast. Love his accent and his (The Beatles) hair. (He must have come as a shock to the American audience back then :-)
