David Fincher is a goddamned magician.

Seyfried and Lily Collins are underrated when they're given good material, and here they were absolutely sparkling. Oldman I personally can leave or take depending upon the role; I much prefer his more down-to-earth roles, and this one was gold. The emulation of the old 40s style black and whites was impeccable from the opening scene, while also breathing new life into the frames. I don't have an HDR screen, but even on my 21:9 screen that Netflix infuriatingly refuses to serve UHD content to, and with the visible artifacting, there's a gorgeous amount of detail in the shadowed interior and exterior night shots.

I'm not a true film buff, and I still haven't seen Citizen Kane (partly due to not wanting to be disappointed since it was the prototype for modern filmmaking, and we've doubtless made many strides in perfecting the techniques pioneered therein) but I have more than enough reason to get a history lesson, and watch the film itself, finally.

I will say that there was an out-of-place weak performance by Tom Burke at the end. Maybe holding his English accent at bay when expressing frustration was too much for him to handle at the same time. But he's barely in the film, so it's overshadowed by the myriad other great performances of which I have barely touched on.

Add a special nod of appreciation to Trent Reznor and Atticus Finch for a perfectly fitting score.
