Inside Man 2006

An interesting structure and some unique directorial touches from Spike Lee elevate a pulpy genre film that could’ve very easily been generic. It’s no Dog Day Afternoon, but certainly entertaining and clever enough. I think you could cut/write out the Jodie Foster stuff and you’d probably have a tighter film. It also could’ve used stronger characters (this whole Robin Hood motivation for the main robber needed to be fleshed out), and there are some jabs taken at ethnic profiling that feel random. It feels like Lee wants to get to the heart of something deeper in regards to inequality, wealth and other socioeconomic issues, but he doesn’t know how to bring it home. Nevertheless, this is a fun watch with a lot of tension, a good score, some fantastic double dolly shots, and clever twists.
