I liked this episode well enough, but wasn't blown away. It was nice that they finally explored a little more of the Rick/Beth relationship, even if it was only by proxy, but I wish they had gone a little further with it. The little planet lent itself to lots of great gags, and it's always pleasant to have some BSG alumni around. But the ending didn't have the emotional punch it was meant to for me. Maybe it's just that the song "Hurt" feels a little overused, so I see the strings in terms of provoking an emotional reaction more than I do in an episode like "Rick Potion No. 9". Maybe it's that the episode had the characters say things that were already palpable as subtext that didn't necessarily gain anything by being said out loud.

That all sounds way more negative about the episode than I mean to be. The squanch language gags were lots of fun, the fight with the federation was imaginatively directed and animated, if a bit predictable given Bird Person's setup for it, and digging into Rick's frustrations with his failed marriage and opening up was a worthy premise. The pacing seemed a little off, but maybe that will be rectified in the episode that picks up the cliffhanger. Still a solid cap to a superb season.
