Influencer 2023

Technically this has more up its sleeve than you might expect. I thought this had some really good cinematography (sure, the locations help out a lot, but who cares) and the music choices also really pop. Trip hop & old school UK dubstep beats, in 2023? Not trendy, but cool nonetheless! The story also threw me for a loop, because once it starts you expect it to be this Harmony Korine/Spring Breakers - we're going to be annoying and vapid on purpose - kind of thing. However, it doesn't go that route, this is not doing on the nose, obvious satire. Instead, after d*cking around for 30 minutes, it just turns into a basic stalker flick? It's a neat idea, but the quality takes a nosedive once this turn happens. There are so many moments that are unintentionally funny, every time CW was smirking or making evil faces behind someone's back I burst out laughing because of how schlocky it is. The score and editing continuously keep implying how dramatic and disturbing it all is, which makes the dumb dialogue and bad acting even funnier. There's just so much schlock appeal here, if only it were also directed like an absurdist comedy.
