[7/10] Okay, this was gross, and it kind of lost me at “Is the whole joke going to be that these aliens are big on boogers?”

But you know what? It won me back on the premise of, “What if a first contact species wasn’t evil in any way, just really gross?” *The Next Generation was full of thorny plots involving the limits of moral relativism, and how far the Federation is willing to go in the name of tolerance and non-interference. So it’s a funny concept to take that same sort of ethics-testing conundrum where the aliens that need tolerating just have grody habits.

The absurdity of the aliens being nose-picking, fish-microwaving, reality T.V.-watching schmucks got me. It’s all so low stakes but repellent, which makes the sketch work. And Jonathan Frakes does a great job with his “No no no no no no no!” when he realizes what’s all over the walls.

On the whole, this one started off on a bad foot, and the gross out humor doesn’t do much for me, but the comedy of the overall situation balances it out for me.
