Crossroads 2002

“I’m not a girl, not yet a woman.” Pop star Britney Spears stars in the coming-of-age film Crossroads. The story follows three estranged high school friends who take a cross-country trip together after graduation. Spears gives a pretty good performance (though is a bit miscast as a virginal pre-med valedictorian), and the supporting cast, which includes Zoe Saldana, Taryn Manning, Dan Aykroyd, and Kim Cattrall, give solid performances as well. And the film tackles some surprisingly mature issues, including sexual abuse, teen pregnancy, and parental abandonment. However, there are also a number of useless filler scenes of singing to the car radio again and again and again, and other minutia. Yet while it has some problems, Crossroads is a compelling teen drama that has some interest things to say.
