i get why the showrunner/writers thought they needed to work up to this episode, but this—a splashy, real life scandal that was inescapable to any semi socially aware adult alive at the time—should’ve been the pilot episode. it draws the viewer in with a compelling take on a familiar story while subtly introducing the characters and revealing their quirks and ticks. an easy choice for a pilot, especially when compared to the actual pilot, which was an absolute bore and a let down of even a filler episode.

but given that the episodes after this are well written and interesting, perhaps there was some studio interference or episode scrambling that made things as they are. who knows.

but i’ll always take a show working it’s way up to greatness over a show with a good start that descends into the inane.

it’s still L&O in the mildest sense, but ive gotten used to the almost potent politeness of the tone lol. and, after the grit and brass and sometimes exhausting showiness of the US line up, the meek lull of this series is a welcome respite.
