I couldn't get enough of the books but this first episode was incredibly off-putting. I was really disappointed. I will check out the second episode but I don't have high hopes.
I also read the books and i agree with you that was somewhat offputting but i like how they show you the world of people who are still sensitive to magic but didn't get admitted into brakebills.
