Daria: Season 5

5x11 Prize Fighters

I really enjoyed this one. Some of the best and most interesting conflicts on this show happen when Daria wants something that goes against her principles, and the way that's reflected in her interactions with those around her. The idea of a scholarship really brought that to the fore. Daria wants to have her pick of colleges, and yet the process of getting the scholarship that would help make that happen, let alone the company offering it, runs counter to so many things that she stands for.

So that what makes her interactions with Jodi particularly interesting -- because Jodi's always been a bit more pragmatic than Daria, but just as smart, which makes Jodi, as she often is, one of Daria's most interesting foils. Daria resents her but doesn't want to show it, and that's a very interesting dynamic. The same is true with Jane feeling left out, Upchuck trying to game the system, and Tom being disgusted by the company's retrograde policies (with Jodi's dad having a particularly interesting and layered reaction to it). There was a lot going on under the hood here, and I appreciated it.

Jake's hotdog adventure were a much more slight element to the episode, but Jake is always good for a solid laugh, and the resolution of his story (no pun intended) was pretty funny as well. All-in-all, some great stuff.
