Starts off like a British tv drama but without the gritty drama or amazing actors. It's still an effective bland British feel. Unexpected and it may put people off that aren't used to it. I liked it. The blandness is cut with a basic alien Sci Fi horror plot, which means mostly horror effects and a creepy atmosphere. I think the two styles work together. The effects are mostly good and there are even some Cronenberg like body horror moments. It's one of the highlight. Near the end of the movie it became a fantasy horror. As I understand it's because of the boy and his age/imagination but I think it's a direction that may put people off and even needed explaining. It's the point were it should have become something deeper story wise and interesting with character development but... enter weird midget and freakiness. There seemed no character development outside of who bonded with who more at various times. Luckily it doesn't try and be anything it's not. The main story worked OK in the end. It's not unique for it's plot but it's execution is different. If you like your Sci Fi more refined and your character with a Hollywood feel then this may not be for you. But lets face it. Against most 80s horrors that are rated higher it's certainly as stupidly sophisticated and more entertaining.
