Something about the movies with years in them. Been this anxious in a movie after a long time and left heartbroken at the end with a lot of empathy. What a watch!
Tovino Thomas's latest is a thoughtful remembrance of Kerala's biggest tragedy and celebrates its heroes
My Rating : :star::star::star::star: ½ (93/100)
2018 is thoughtful yet heart-rending remembrance of the biggest natural tragedies in Kerala due to incessant rains. Jude Anthony Joseph's latest catastrophic drama is a testimony of how a good chunk of popular mollywood actors came in to contribute to this brilliantly designed and executed film just like the common men came to save the day back in 2018. A harrowing tragedy which rattled peace and harmony in the usual lives of most people in Kerala is reiterated with a commendable production design, soulful and consequential music and earnest performances from the cast. 2018 truly deserves the applause from the masses like it did and made this the all time highest grossing Malayali film. Tovino's empathetic performance and Akhil P Dharmajan's distinct writing are the key highlights of this emotionally overwhelming drama which solidifies the fact that humanity wins over chaos in any form.
Screenplay is linear and acts as a mosaic of multiple events and characters coming together. Technically the film is brilliant and the production design and editing is pretty convincing. The direction though commendable still had much more potential. The lovely music dignifies the tension and emotional quotient. Tovino is gem to Indian Film fraternity and he delivers yet another brilliant act. Asif Ali is equally good in the dynamic character he plays.
Overall, 2018 is a monumental film in terms of the quality and writing of character arcs. A film you all need to watch and celebrate. Malayalam films are the most advanced and beautiful films in terms of quality of content they provide. Another reason for you to watch this is that its available in most popular languages including Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.
