Watched it in cinema, not worth the 15 bucks. Okay movie to watch when you're bored, basic action and predictable plot. Could've been a great movie if it was executed correctly, character development is quite poor.
Rated 1 just because John Malkovich was in it. Sad that Jessica Chastain had to do this kind of a movie. This movie should not have been made...it's that bad.
This one was pretty bad :pensive:
We're once again presented with a really skilled person dealing with alcoholism like it's the only weakness writers can come up with. Every movie about (ex- or about to be ex-) black-ops goes the same way. A trauma (usually family related) leading to alcoholism. Made me think about at least 5 other movies except this one really had nothing new to show shine.
There are also a lot of "how can a single person take that many hit without being completely broken at some point?” and “why are the 50 guys with automatic guns so bad at aiming while the 1 with the knife and the handgun kill them all?” moments
And if that’s not enough, some characters are really acting stupid when they shouldn’t. I mean the whole, let’s send her in a trap, because she talked to the target, she won’t survive the heavy-military-guarded fortress she’s sent to. If that fails, let’s send just one trained-to-kill man after the trained-to-kill woman who just killed 50 trained-to-kill people. If that fails, let’s kill the man who trained the woman, send her a video to piss her off and go after her yourself. If that fails, the clearly bad-at-the-job daughter can follow the woman who killed everybody to make us think what?? I don’t know ¯\(ツ)/¯
A good cast but the rest falls short and it doesn’t make a good movie in the end.
Jessica Chastain: Hey, let's make one of those movies about a badass woman with a kickass job that instead focuses on her romance and family drama.
There was more action than I expected, but they could've tried to make it at least a little original...
Another "Nikita" type of film. ok Chastain is on it, that should be enough. Kicking and fighting is a role that suits here, like a new Liam Neeson. No significant twists, story is well paced, not get bored with the action, and a sequel could be made.
Bland, illogical character behaviour, uninspiring choreography, no plot twists or thrilling reveals.
In short, nothing special.
Jessica tried the action genre, it's not for her. Also the story is bad.
So the primary problem I have with this film, beyond the poor acting by the stars, is that the characters all suck. I have no interest in any of them and am actively rooting against the main character. Chastain is an adequate actress, but she is just not good in this. Farrell and Malkovich are both good, but have small parts and are basically playing the same roles they have played many times before. Davis is good, but has a shit role. Common is probably the most likeable in this movie and probably the only character I even moderately care about. I certainly don't care at all for Weixler. I keep hoping she will be collateral damage.
Ava is a fairly average and somewhat underwhelming action-thriller. The story follows an assassin whose boss tries to take her out when she becomes a liability after a job goes bad. Starring Jessica Chastain, John Malkovich, and Colin Farrell, the film has a solid cast that gives decent performances. However, the script is rather weak, cluttering the plot a bit with inane family drama. Still, the fight scenes are pretty good and well-choreographed; though there are fewer than one would expect for this type of film. Ava delivers some thrills, but overall it’s rather rote and predictable.
Ultimately it's just another action movie about a super assassin. It's good enough that if you're looking for simple entertainment, it'll do.
Chastain does a fine job and really pulls off the femme fatale role, whether she's delivering spin kicks or trying to make sense of her family history. She's the main reason to watch this movie, but there's only so much for her to work with.
Weixler also turns in a nice performance. Farrell is pretty good, Malkovich does adequately Malkovich things, and Common also appears in the film.
I can imagine the pitch meeting where Chastain agreed to do this one. "You've seen action movies about assassins before, but what happens to their families and the lives they left behind? What if we really explored how those people are affected? Also we'll pay you a whole bunch and give you several months of free hollywood-style personal training."
This movie just had no heartbeat
Absolutely predictable plot. Great fight scenes.
I was expecting the typical cookie cutter formula for this and instead found it to be filled with characters thst had depth and a solid storyline.
This was painful to watch. Terrible.
Jessica is good Nice movie 7/10
it was a pretty okay movie i loved how Jessica Chastain character was kicking butt the way that she was. To me it seemed that the movie ended on a cliffhanger of sorts. Its sad though Ava didnt get her happy ending though
For the cast it has and the budget, this is a turd.
Chastain is about as believable as a skilled killer as Marge Simpson would be. The action sequences are pitifully slow, choppily edited, and wholly unbelievable.
The plot has come from Scripts By Numbers. The score couldn't be any more overbearing if they tried.
I remember Haywire - a similar movie - being roundly battered by critics despite it being a solid action movie with a highly charismatic lead actress in Gina Carano. In my opinion this is vastly inferior.
So why shouldn't this be similarly panned?
It's got the kiss of death in casting Common. It wastes Geena Davis. It continues the decline of John Malkovich.
Don't watch this. Watch Haywire.
3.5/10
A very weak film, but with a decent ending.
My personal opinion is that this movie is similar to the John Wick series, well, John Wick is a grade 10 series, and this film is grade 4, but I compare it because they both revolve around this topic.
Action ..... very funny this word in this movie, because there are a few scenes that last only two minutes.
I didn't really want to see him because the trailer was very weak.
It's just a forgettable grade 4 movie.
I enjoyed the action scenes and John M. was good. I think it was over burdened by the family drama.
Honestly, it's pretty much Salt (Angelina Jolie) without the cool factor. Where, Salt had you on the edge of your seat and wanting to know what will happen. This doesn't have even have that.
I hate films what leave you how it did but other than that it was a decent film with some good action and sound performance from Jessica, good role for her.
It's no oscar movie but it's an honest one and half hour entertainment with a kind of unusual role for Jessica. But I liked her here. Story isn't new or original, has been done before and will probably made again.
Don't expect the world from it just because of the cast. They do good with as little they got. But no one plays an a*s*o*e as convincing as Farrell. He's got a natural talent for it.
Count no man as happy until his end is known
Μηδένα προ του τέλους μακάριζε
Yeah, "all that Greek shit" that the writer doesn't even fucking know that it was Solon who said it to Croesus!!!
Solon!

This is really cheap, low budget! A waste of money and a waste of time. How can you produce a movie like this. Do not waste your time
Ava may not reach the upper echelons of top assassin movies, but it offers an entertaining experience that keeps you engaged. Jessica Chastain's performance adds depth to the character, and the film delivers on action and intrigue. While it doesn't reinvent the genre, it's a solid option for those seeking an enjoyable assassin-centric thriller.
I want my 96 minutes of my life back. That was a bullshit movie that I only watched because my girlfriend likes Jessica Chastain. Well that was a total waste of time.
Well known actors making a movie about a betrayed contract killer, it's entertaining. The best thing is that we know where Robyn from the series The Good Wife went to make this movie.
This is decent and has some really well shit action sequences but at the end of the day it's just an action movie that follows the same basic plots of all other action movies. It just wasn't anything special but was an okay watch for a Saturday night.
I actually enjoyed the first ~70 minutes. The private background was decent enough and certainly more than most action flicks usually provide.
But the climax was a big letdown. Dialogues, plot, combat - the final is just subpar all over.
I can't believe Jessica Chastain chose to do this kind of movie. I decided to watch it just because of her, but ended up wishing that this movie didn't exist. The script was completely predictable. And pointless. Seriously. What was the point of the plot?
And also, Chastain did not look believable at all as an assassin. She carried herself like she always does. A serious but not athletic woman in her 40s who woke up with a 3 month old headache. Good for dramas, really bad for an action movie. Seriously... why.
The action choreography was decent, but the story didn't quite keep me interested.
Diana Silvers was underused in this film. If there's a sequel, I would love to see more of her character.
Trash, Trash!
What's trash?
This movie!!!
This movie felt like a Female John wick movie. I liked it!
An AI (or a Hollywood exec) wrote a film that has no soul and no meaning. Why?
Besson did it (imperfectly) with Nikita a hundred years ago.
Ava is painting by numbers, saccharine, straight to dvd waste material.
I have no grudge against mrs Chastain but I beg you to avoid this movie.
It has no redeeming value.
Damn.
Skip this (minimum words met)
Hey Jessica Chastain, I dare you, i double dare you to make a good movie again!
With a cast like that, I expected a bomb movie, yet it was disappointing. The dialogues were so cliche and cringy, I actually thought I was watching a soap opera or something. Such a waste honestly, a little better scenario would've turned this movie into a "female John Wick" type of thing.
I love Jessica Chastain but this movie was a complete mess. It is missing 30 minutes just to be a coherent bad movie. Then we could start to talk about why every choice was wrong!
Straight-toVHS/DVD/VOD/whatever-Movie about a good actor who is an assasin. I mean an Assasin played by... ah whatever.
I will not start to give more effort here than the Writer and Director. Some shots are neat though (drone-shots). And some fights are not looking perfect, but you can see that the actor gave there best to stunt them.
The Story is all over the place.
Damn, now i really gave you more effort than the filmmaker. Well, Jessica did as well. Hopefully her next movie will be better.
Well...this was...rather dull. As a matter of fact, it was incredibly dull. No plot twists, no really exciting action, and the story are sooooooo slow, sane people would just turn the darn thing off.
The acting is not all that bad, but that doesn't mean a thing because, after 10 minutes, most people would be too bored to even notice.
With that cast, one could hope that Ava was a good movie, but as it stands, it's not worth the cheap digital medium it was recorded on.
Non stop action fest, very enjoyable light touch watch. Not a mega amount of storyline but fun
Not a good movie. Chastain is the only redeeming aspect, even then she's an unconvincing assassin. Character development is both rushed and ham fisted. The plot is very limited.
Typical hollywood bullshit, netflix became a mecca for crappy content.
Less than the sum of its parts. Credible cast, reasonable premise, but somehow limp and listless. "Written by Matthew Newton" must play a significant part.
There is no twist - paint by numbers.
Did not make me warm or cold. Meh it’s ok. No twist in the story, you could see everything from a mile away. Action was ok...
with the number of known actors in it, you'd think there would be something to hold it up. negative, batman. This movie went from point A to point B without me giving a shit. cant win them all, sure as hell didn't here.
"noone is happy until the end is known" .. i disagree. if i could have avoided the known and just ended it, i would have been very happy
Great cast made me think it might be good enough for a story seen a thousand times. Great cast proved me wrong.
Enjoyed watching this, good performance of Jessica.
Are you expecting this to be about a Sibling rivalry ?
This movie is okay if you want to watch something just to watch something. I don't understand how you put together such a cast for a story like this. They didn't save the movie from being shit, so... It's curious to think about why they thought this was a good film for them.
The action's fine and the actors are good. Sadly, this is a by the numbers genre entry that will quickly be forgotten.
With so few movies coming out in 2020, anything new is trending. However trending doesn't necessarily mean good. This is a crap movie with a crap plot and a crap end. There is nothing new in this in anyway. If you want to watch something because you're bored, this is perfect but you won't ever watch it again or recommend it to anyone else.
the story wasn't written well but overall it's a good action movie
I enjoyed this movie. Good action, passes the time nicely. Set up for a sequel? Anyway, worth a watch. :thumbsup_tone1:
The comments below are pretty on the money. Switched it off after about 1/3rd way in.
This is just an OK movie - action was half decent. Chastain & Malkovich are in it so that alone makes it worth a look-see.

This has some horrific acting and stilted dialogue, felt like a soap opera and a John Wick fanfilm smashed together with a cast list unfitting of the final products quality. Why did Malkovich, Farrell and Chastain even sign on for this? Even die hard action fans will be hard pressed to find anything of worth in this 90 minute bomb.
