Just watched this movie a 3rd time.
It's so good :ribbon: can't wait to get this on blu-ray
Super entertaining and enjoyable film that refreshingly doesn’t take itself too seriously. I did initially think the ending was a bit “weak” because the movie pushes against norms or promotes so many ideas, but doesn’t end up doing much about any of them. However, like I said, it doesn’t take itself so seriously so why should I expect it to be so serious? Plus, the more I thought about it, the more the ending makes sense. I appreciate movies that I can continue to think about after the fact.
There was a lot of humor, and I didn’t think it was forced in. It was satirical, it was self aware, and it was excellently written and acted.
What a great movie with an important message! I also love Margot Robbie!
Ever notice how men are the only ones commenting that it’s bad? Cause they don’t get it - they think it’s got too many themes too many mixed up ideas, too many Paradoxes. But that’s what this movie is about. This movie is about growing up as a woman, cis and trans, and how paradoxical it is. This is about how women and men alike are forced to fit into these images and when they don’t they’re hurt. Yes there were problems with the films (some jokes didn’t land, the Mattel criticism seemed unfinished, etc) but the idea that the film was “bad” and something you shouldn’t want because it “hated men” (or you know told men to not base their worth on a woman’s validation - but whatever right) is a crazy idea
If pink was a colour, then this movie would — oh, wait...
liked this a lot, it was definitely a joy to watch, but I think my expectations might have been too high. the performances are incredible, and I LOVED the production design, barbieland looked immaculate, but overall this just felt a tad bit... shallow? maybe I had too much spoiled for me ahead of time, but I just didn't love this the way I thought I would
also, gosling is fantastic as ken but I think there was a little too much ken and the kens for my liking, I would have loved to see some of the other barbies get more screentime/depth
ik people shit on lady bird a lot but idk that movie held more weight for me in terms of its story and script
the stuff I liked most was the humor for sure but also the stuff with america/margot and margot on her own, I wish there was MORE of that!! I wanted more of them together as a trio, sasha's character ends up really being sidelined and America is awesome and has been underrated by critics but again, she needed more!I like I could have done without the ken beach fight/dance montage even though ik that's a high point for a lot of people idk
I think I need to rewatch this too to get a better idea of how i feel overall
in terms of greta's big three i think little women > lady bird > barbie for me at least for now until I revisit all of them
It's hilarious!! I spent at least 70% of this laughing. It's an amazing commentary on sexism and patriarchy in general, as well as the discrepancy between intention and reality. Allen is a BAMF. It was also a nice touch to have the Kens united after a fight.
Some of the dialogue is a little on the nose and the reactions are dramatic but that's what made it so funny and amazing to watch.
It's okay not to be perfect. We aren't defined by people around us or what we think should define us. That's the message. This was a good movie, I laughed, I cried, I had fun. Maybe try to enjoy life once in a while instead of getting outraged over a movie's positive message.
What a fun movie! I was scared that Barbie would become extreme feminist propaganda, but it touches so many other subjects too and does it in the best way possible: not too seriously. We knew from the first leaked photo that the casting was perfect, but seeing it play out like this exceeded my expectations. I lol'd a few times in the cinema. It has so many stupid jokes (I mean that in the best way possible), that I would be really surprised if anyone didn't laugh at least once. True, I don't agree with every message they try to tell, but it's so much fun that I don't even really care. I just enjoyed the ride.
give america ferrera all the AWARDS in award season 2024 please and thanks!
Dude, I loved it!
The last scenes resonate so well with me.
Also, I liked that Emma Mackey is there!
Margot Robbie looks so young here.
And Ryan Gosling is ideal for Ken's role. I've seen him in Scooby Doo as Fred and he was exactly Ken!
You can find it a typical Hollywood movie but there’s so much depth to this storyline. I’m personally not into these, a little bit musical like movies with the singing, but in this movie it didn’t bother me at all. It’s a kind of movie that you’d ride along with and makes you think afterwards. Billie Eilish wroted such an amazing and relatable song for the movie.
Bold concept, amazing writing, awesome visuals, great songs and courageously acted with fun and smarts.
8/10 Very great!
Thought it was a ton of fun. Ryan Gosling stole every scene that he was in. I thought it was a little bit over hyped and a tad in-your-face with some of its messaging but in all still was a fun time at the movies.
Fun, fantastic film with a dash of existential crisis thrown in. I did not have high hopes for this kind of IP-based material, but I should have known that Gerwig would make something meaningful and at times profound. I loved the sense of humor throughout and cheered at the moments of patriarchy-smashing and self-empowerment. I watched it in a theater with noisy kids, so I wasn't able to fully connect with the quiet ending--need a rewatch. But what I was able to focus on, I loved.
the start of this movie had me turning to my side & thinking "did we really just pay actual money to see this" and, i've honestly felt that way at least three times i think, but honestly, throughout the movie, it gets so much better, and it had me laughing in moments i didn't even expect to laugh
set design & costumes did a sensational job, as expected, truly great work ngl
& Margot Robbie was amazing, i honestly wouldn't be surprised if this movie won an award or two, it might actually deserve it
with all that said;
Barbie. Best cinematic experience & piece of film ever produced by mankind. a literal 10/10 for me.
I feel like The Lego Movie set the bar high for meta, toy-based film properties and while I don't think Barbie clears that bar, it still makes a respectable attempt. Yes, the social commentary is perhaps a bit too on the nose (to put it lightly), but the performances, creative production design, and humor were enough to carry it through. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed some of the music/dance sequences. Ken's big choregraphed number during the beach fight had me thinking it's about time to do a re-watch of La La Land. With respect to pacing, the ending dragged on a bit, and overall I think some time could be trimmed without losing much.
Own the camp and it’s pretty awesome. They got super close to nailing something most people couldn’t even imagine. I just think it quite didn’t reach the tippy top. Apart from stereotypical Barbie’s story, the other plot points don’t full resolve. Nevertheless, incredible movie and a phenomenon, of course.
I laughed really hard, despite myself
give america ferrera the oscar already for that speech!!:clap_tone1::clap_tone1::clap_tone1:
Espetacular songs, jokes and roles. Ryan Gosling has impeccable physical humor. Allan is the best character.
Barbie makes an incredibly important statement in a fun and intelligent way. That statement is strongest in the beginning and middle of the film. Rather than adding an exclamation point to its message, the ending falls flat and weakens an otherwise brilliant film.
Loved this movie! Lots of laughing out loud for me. Loved how Ken’s job was “beach.” I mean!! I thought it was a kids movie- oops! But I think I liked it more than the kids. I definitely understood it better than they did. The Mattel board was the weak link, and they did not need to come to Barbie land. I also wish the Barbies could have figured out a way to find equality instead of keeping the Kens down like women are kept down in the “real world.” Otherwise a slam dunk!
10yo’s review: Cute clothes. Cute House. Too much Ken. Too much singing. Too much abs. Ken is complicated and gay. Too much crying.
I live to feel the heat of my wife eyes… with a music from Billie Eilish playing in the background
genuinely so fun. went places that I didn't expect, clearly enjoyed what it was doing. one of those films where its clear the cast were having fun. plus A24 actually pay their cast and agreed to the union requests.
also definite trans allegory going on. not the main theme but easy reading to make of it. felt validating
7.5/10
Probably the best version of a Barbie movie imaginable with plenty of 4th wall breaking and beautiful faux-realistic sets. Although not without its flaws like overindulgence in stereotypical talking points and not being above taking cheap shots, it does arrive at a reasonably nuanced albeit wavering conclusion.
(Also, one doesn't always have to 100% agree with something to appreciate it for what it set out to be).
Loved the Kenergy of Ryan Gosling! (Also, the two major Kens and the Allan all being Canadian was awesome!) Margot was spot on, America was perfect, Hari and Kate were hilarious, Rhea was beautiful! The practical sets were incredible to see! The colour, the choreo, the music, the fun!! And the heart! And I love that this has created a movie-going experience that we haven’t had in popular culture for years and I hope it helps bring people back to the cinema. Hi, Barbie! :sparkling_heart:
wow. i loved it.. what a brilliant concept
I didn’t have much expectations for this movie. I was expecting to dislike it or just feel meh about it but I ended up really enjoying it! It tackled tough topics with a delicacy while still having humor. I really enjoyed this movie!
Greta Gerwig's on the nose social commentary in disguise of a brilliantly designed plastic world.
My Rating : :star::star: (45/100)
Barbie is a monumental achievement in terms of its eye pleasing production design yet is too preachy in terms of its messaging. Barbie is silly and messy and doesnt take itself seriously in the first half which was funny and enjoyable but its undertones drastically shift towards a preachy take on toxic masculinity and the usual gender norms. The film is a social commentary or sattire masked in plastic dolls. Its wasn't powerful or resonating to me as it is for people who loved it. It dilutes the harshness of patriarchy which is a serious problem in the living world. There is a scene where Barbies unite to cause chaos by disrupting peace within the Kens by swindling them. How can this be good? I loved the way Greta has designed the whole world but the messaging and commentary wasn't appealing to me nor my wife who went to watch it.
Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling are true gems ofcourse. They are the best looking actors for the particular roles and the understood the assignment pretty well. The first half is enjoyable and no one can deny it. Ryan is good, Margot is good but calling them exceptional is going overboard according to me. People have already nominated Ryan Gosling for Oscars and nothing can be more hilarious than this. Its also overlooking hardworking actors in the west.
For someone who loved Barbie film will disagree and hate me for my opinion but this is a place where I put my unfiltered views on a film. I respect women and despise patriarchy but these two are so difficult and hard-hitting subjects to be addressed in a silly film as Barbie. For people in the West I would recommend films like The Great Indian Kitchen and Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey which is more hillarious and profound compared to Barbie in terms of its messaging. Watch it only if you ever owned a Barbie for the nostalgia else skip it atleast in Theatres.

Rated a Connor 10, normal 8.6
A movie that was enjoyable and a good time but not necessarily a great movie from an objective stand point.
Like the neural network in my penis: it's amazing they could fit something so complex and invigorating in something so short and funny.
It's incredible how well Tightrope Barbie walls the line between self-aware, meta, self-deprecating, insightful, product placement and uplifting. There may have been one two many speeches for my taste, but most of the film is as entertaining as my... analogy at the top of the review.
I think it could have been tidier thematically. It feels like it has two distinct themes (the beauty of being human and living and the importance of men and women treating each other with respect) that could have been one solid theme but just didn’t quite mesh in the most cohesive manner. So that felt a bit sloppy to me.
However, the story was unique and fun, the visuals were captivating and humorous, the music was perfect, and the casting and acting were spot on for a movie about dolls. It was an extremely fun, enjoyable movie.
I also appreciated the subtle points Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach wrote into this feminist film to rein it in and state that radical third wave feminism isn’t the answer and that men are also humans worthy of respect.
I don’t think it’s perfect, but all in all, I’d say it’s definitely worth a watch.

Greta Gerwig is a hit and miss for me, but this was a great hit! I'm off to sing "I'm just Ken" until I'm blue in the face.
