The MC got a little more than he deserved.
Could not disagree more, I thought it was fantastic. I don't usually like found footage movies but this one did it better than most. I've been waiting for a film that explores what would really happen if a bunch of teenagers got powers, and I think this did a great job. Looking forward to the sequel!
Mindbending :) If you dislike scifi sure, ignore it. Otherwise ... you just have to see it!! This is proper scifi ... they took a simple concept and kept building on it. Very cool to see :)
I hope there will be a second one.
I have little patience with movies where the perspective is a 'camera' held by one of the actors. This one is no exception...did NOT work for me at all. Slow paced and stupid. Would have made a decent short film if they had used real cameras...
definitely worth watching, very entertaining. the end is very good!
Chronicle took me off guard and blew me away. It is the best "found footage" movie in my opinion, more enjoyable then Cloverfield was. It is a little slow to pick up, but once you get to the point when they get their abilities it picks up. It was funny, dark, and thrilling. Some of the scenes when they are using their abilities are a lot better than most superhero films I have seen. All around it was a fun movie that I loved a lot. I highly recommend this film! Go see it!
"See, it's different, because you've always had friends, and people want to talk to you and be around you. I never had any of that."
Found footage films can be a little gimmicky but Chronicle does it so well and it makes sense. This is a great low budget hero film that will probably be too slow in the begining for some, but the end pays off for sure. Also goes to show that we can sometimes be a product of our environment, but it shouldn't define us.
A true superhero origin story that puts the viewer in the middle of three teens discovering their incredible new talents. It does a good job of making you think about what you would do with such terrific power. The story starts small and swells into a really colossal battle of good against evil. The best moments are the small ones. The ones that touch on the wonders of discovery.
The ending battle is breathtaking. The special effects are pretty good, good enough to sell the premise, and there are just enough small personal character touches to make you care about the teens.
Surprised by how much I actually enjoyed this. I found it interesting that they use 'found footage' style here but it works. Honestly, it's a breath of fresh air. It's utilized to the fullest and there's some clever choices throughout. The film is a dark and realistic depiction of teenagers if they got superpowers. There's a grounded feeling comes from the give-take relationship between teenagers and it doesn't fail to entertain. DeHaan does a good job of portraying a troubled character and his struggles feel realistic, unlike most superhero films out there.
Starts boring and stays boring. It's like chewing gum that you don't want in your mouth.
It's a decent movie, it had its ups and downs. But a lot is left out unclear at the end.
But it is entertaining and worth a watch :-)
i agree with boardyuk. took way too long to get where it was going. would have been better with a real camera, and shortened to about 25 min. keeping the last 15.
Sure the plot holes are bigger than Ben Hur. I know I'd be down at the casino earning millions, who wouldn't, but 4/10 is a bit rough.
I enjoyed it, was a bit skeptical at the beginning of the movie but it turned out to be pretty good. I gave it a 7
I enjoyed this movie and tried to figure out why people didn't like it whilst watching it but honestly couldn't see much wrong. I'd recommend going to see it!!
That movie was a good suprise and well scripted for me.I watched it without any expectations and i choose it because it wasn't too long but it turned out be very good with superb last 15 minutes. 7.3/10 worths a watch for sure it's fun.
A drama-thriller superhero film, Chronicle is Brightburn if it was more competent and spent its time to develop the characters. The pace can be quite slow in the first half, but its slowness is crafted in such a way that you can't help but sympathize with the confusion, exhilaration, satisfaction, disappointment, and anger the group feels throughout the film - especially Andrew. It takes you to the time when high school was full of possibilities and, at the same time, full of disappointment.
The use of "found footage", despite the at times erratic angle, helps with connecting to the guys in the film, as if you're part of the group witnessing the event unfolds. I like that the film uses different cameras (surveillance camera, others' phones, etc) to convey scenes where Andrew's footage would not make sense.
When the climax eventually hits it feels quite painful as you've seen the group's ups and downs, and you'd find yourself believing under different circumstances they would've been something else. That being said, the final showdown lacks a little bit of oomph from the hectic and chaos it caused. Perhaps the only sequences where the found footage angle could use better work.
Not the greatest film, but still worth watching.
It was a good film , although I think they could have shot the climax fight scene better . You won't know how fast one and half hour goes by it's that entertaining. I feel like they could have explained how they got the powers better and what the thing that gave powers was .
I give it a 7/10
I think the 'found footage' technique is done quite well
Watched it because my sister told me to. It was okay, I liked the story, but it was super unrealistic sometimes which broke my immersion. I mean yeah how realistic could a telekinesis film be but sometimes it was a little overboard. My first thought when they were flying was how do they breathe up there? I also didn't like how Steve has to die, he was the most likeable imo. Overall it was OK but I probably won't watch it again because it's one of those movies that once you know how everything turns out there's no point to watch it again.
ironically the party movie Project X is more focused than this intense character film. This movie doesn't know what it is. Typical Max Landis material. It's 80% of the way there and yet it flops because of the missing 20%. A very frustrating movie that could have been fixed but wasn't.
This awkward blend of several trendy genres has something to say, but can't quite work out the right way to say it. As the meeting point between superhero origin pictures, found footage compilations and moody coming-of-age stories, it arrives pre-loaded with all manner of tripmines and potholes, so numerous that it can't hope to avoid them all. It feels hokey and gimmicky, particularly when the action grows intense and the plot bends over backwards for an excuse to introduce more handheld cameras. The cast interactions feel rushed and shallow, hurrying past crucial bits of character development to reach the precious prize of a shiny effects shot. And even those, presumably the film's sizzle, unanimously feel weak and clunky.
Chronicle has a point, and the ruminations it embraces about the underbellies of each genre have loads of potential. It's just so poorly executed, nearly across the board, that it's tough to focus on what's going on beneath the hood. Excellent as a rough sketch or a proof of concept, flat as a finished product.
This movie definitely has it strengths and weaknesses I still feel for most movies like this where a charcter holds the camera that us as audience feels left out somewhat or not as apart as the story as we could be which something similar was said in the movie actually which I thought was cool. A cool concept with a lot of potential. Not that the decisions made in the movie were movie bad or anything I just think for the sake of the story things could have turned out differently. Liked the ending considering they went the way they did. Also wish villain was sorta more human I mean he had reasons and issues I wish he just showed a part of him that knew he was wrong or showed grief. Could have been a lot better, but still was pretty good.
Spiderman: "every great power comes great responsibility" "Power corrupts", "do not give a gun to a monkey"
Because you gotta know how to use your power... ;>
When the man with mental illness gets the special power.
Wow. I must say that I was a bit caught off guard by this film. I did not expect much out of it but I was so wrong. It was different. I loved the idea of the film. Definitely worth a watch
that kid really knows how to throw a temper tantrum
The characters are the story. Great use of special effects.
The best superpowers movie!
It was pretty crappy. The concept behind the movie was pretty good but the fact that it was filmed Cloverfield style made it suck. Not just the way the footage was filmed but the entire narrative that resulted from that style. It would have been much better if just filmed like an ordinary movie without all the camera bullshit.
the way the camera was was a bit weird but still good
Didn't feel it. I kinda felt like this was a movie about nothing.
Wow wasn't expecting it to be THIS good! Really reminded me of Akira at the end.
Really wish I hadn't wasted my time watching this, just never seemed to go anywhere which is a shame as it had so much potential.
There's only so much room in the film world for these lost footage type of movies. And this one fills a part of that space nicely.
this moving isn't going to win any awards, but if you want to be entertained, it was worth it.
nice movie.
it reminded me a little bit of blair witch project in some parts.
Good movie but the camera work was getting annoying at some points.
I really enjoyed watching this movie. It's sort of an super-antihero movie where the main characters get superpowers but instead of taking up vigilante roles where they defeat bad guys they just goof of, just for the fun of it. Especially the part where they move the car in the parking lot and make fun of the woman trying to find her car was very fun to watch.
I definitely see some influences from other movies in this movie, namely: Akira (1988) and Cloverfield (2008). Did anyone else see that? Especially the last 15 minutes of the movie reminded me a lot of the classic anime movie Akira.
I gave it a 10 out of 10. Namely because i am getting a little tired of all those superhero movies the last couple of years (with the exception of kick-ass off course!). I know that superhero movies are by definition sci-fi, but at least in this movie they tried to make the superpowers ability look realistic by especially giving Andrew Detmer (rising star Dane DeHaan who kind of looks like a young Leonardo DiCaprio) a very decent background story and a good character dept. I hope we get to see more of these kind of superhero movies.
This movie was awesome. Don't believe anyone that says otherwise. It was highly enjoyable.
Eh... I'm not a big fan of the Cloverfield style, but the movie was cool enough to deserve a +1.
Good show :-) bit limited by the format but had a good atmosphere. Would recommend.
Here is why it should be on your watchlist!

A good movie with a solid story, the main character is kind of pathetic though. It's not that he didn't have his reasons for being that way, it's that he never considered what he doing was wrong. Other than some minor flaws this movie is pretty well made. If it goes as to how I would hope, it would also be the best superhero origin movie in recent times.
To get real deep one must get real high.
That's what I think the movie Chronicle did right among many things.
It got you real connected with the characters making you understand them, sympathize and be one with them. It doesn't simply show you a group of friends that you will follow the whole film, you are part of the group. That is how immersive the experience was: When they're laughing you're laughing with them, in their moment of weakness it felt like you're part of the group, sharing the moment with them and when everything went out of control it felt like you were involved, truly scared for your life.
It felt so real that the moment it all fell apart it was very emotional. It felt like Andrew was your actual friend, and this friend is doing something wrong yet as his friend you know you can't blame him after all he's been through, you know it's his pain that's gotten the better of him, and yet you know you still have to stop him. You feel all this the whole time that the moment the spear struck him it felt like you actually killed a friend (not that I know what that feels like but you know what I mean).
It was very painful, ergo, very masterfully done.
In addition to that, the use of the First Person Perspective also amplified the intimacy as much as the cast amplified the experience. I'd say it's a masterpiece of a film and if you're okay with taking advice from a random person from the internet then to you I say - Watch it.
The main idea of the movie is great, but realization is fair.
Just some teenage movie.
6\10
Great movie and a really good example of found footage and shaky cam done well.
What a load of ....!
